READ THIS
FIRST.

Lights Out is a well-researched starting point, not a replacement for emergency services, trained professionals or your own judgement. By using this site you accept the terms below.

In an emergency, call 999 (or 112 from any mobile) first. Then follow instructions from the police, Bomba, APM, NADMA, the Ministry of Health and other authorities. Their instructions come before anything on this site.

General information only

Everything on Lights Out (the website, its checklists, scenario briefs, tools and any downloads) is general information for reference and education. It is written for Malaysian households in general, not for your particular home, health, family or situation.

Not professional advice

Nothing here is medical, first-aid, legal, financial, electrical, structural or any other professional advice, and it does not create any professional relationship with you. The first-aid chapter is a reminder sheet, not training: take a certified course with the Malaysian Red Crescent, St John Ambulance Malaysia or another recognised provider. For health concerns, see a doctor. For legal questions, including anything about self-defence, weapons or property, speak to a lawyer or the police. For wiring, gas, generators and structural damage, use a licensed professional.

Every emergency is different

Conditions change quickly and are never exactly the same twice. Stay vigilant, keep your situational awareness, and use your own judgement about what is safe for you and the people with you. Treat our tips as well-researched recommendations, not the definitive answer. If something here doesn’t fit what is happening in front of you, trust the situation and official instructions over the page.

Your safety is your responsibility

Activities described here, including DIY builds, cooking over fire, using tools, knives, stoves, lamps, generators and slingshots, storing fuel or water, foraging and travelling in bad weather, carry real risk of injury, illness, fire or damage. Do them only if you are able to do them safely, follow manufacturers’ instructions and local laws, and supervise children at all times. Never eat a wild plant or mushroom you cannot identify with certainty.

Accuracy and updates

We work hard to keep the information accurate and current, but we cannot guarantee that it is complete, correct or up to date. Phone numbers, laws, official services and guidance can change without notice. Check important details with official sources such as NADMA, APM, JPS Public Info Banjir, MetMalaysia, APIMS and the Ministry of Health before relying on them.

Products, shops and other websites

Mentions of products, brands, shops and services are for convenience and are not endorsements or guarantees of quality, safety or availability. We are not responsible for third-party websites, products or services, or for their content, prices or practices. If we ever earn a commission from a link or are given a product to review, we will say so clearly next to it.

Humour

We use humour to make preparation easier to remember. It is never meant to make light of anyone’s loss or experience of a disaster.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Lights Out, its authors, contributors and partners are not liable for any loss, injury, illness, death, damage or expense of any kind, whether direct, indirect or consequential, arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site or any information, tool or download from it. You use the site and act on its contents at your own risk. Nothing in this disclaimer limits any liability that cannot be limited under Malaysian law.

Governing law
